Interested in creative community work on the West Bank?

Some folks working out of the Bryan Coyle Center are looking for help this summer from artists who might be interested in youth mural and art projects, i.e. painting art on balusters, garbage cans, utility boxes, etc.

If you’re interested, contact them directly, or let us know if you want us to connect the dots.

Our spring rent party is this Saturday at WBSC. We’ll be bobbing for apples, shadow dancing, sippin’ from a bottomless punch bowl, and engaging in the usual chatter.

This is a party to help pay the rent, so it’ll be a suggested $5 at the door, but no one will be turned away.

Minneapolis Art on Wheels media artist Andrea Steudel + DJ Luke will be there to help you shake your apple bottom!

Activities begin at 9PM!

The best representation of WBSC ever! Sam Esguerra, a University of Minnesota Morris student, painted some water colors during the Beneath the University conference last week. If you missed the conference, you can watch recordings here.

Beneath the University, the Commons, April 8-11, 2010

This is the third year this conference has brought together an international group of activists and scholars to address a wide range of approaches to the crisis of higher education. The program is online here.

This year, West Bank Social Center is happy to host the group. Check out their website beneaththeu.org for more more details. This conference is free and open to the public!

We Did It.

We cleaned the place up! Last weekend, the WBSC crew and our friends from Minneapolis Art on Wheels (MAW) spent two days purging, scrubbing, building and organizing the space into something resembling a collaborative work environment. We even signed up for internet service.

Starting in April, MAW will be moving in and coordinating an Artist Residency Program. Visiting artists from the Twin Cities, across the country, and beyond will be using the space to create public projects. Look for updates here and stop by when you can.

Some events will still be taking place at WBSC, including our next rent party on Saturday, April 17th. Save the date!

Tonight!

Performance art collective you beast, you gem takes over WBSC with some sparkly, glittery antics that we’re sure will require sunglasses and a shop vac.

Things get started around 9PM, look for the sandwich board and come on up!

Tarnish & Gold Gallery

As we clean out WBSC’s accumulated ephemera in preparation for spring - we’re reminded of this time last year, when we were scrambling to gather the resources we needed to get the space up an running. (Thank you to those who donated the organ, the candy dispenser, and the weird ceramic teapot/coat hook that keeps appearing in the office).

Over the past months there have been a number of new art & event spaces cropping up that we’re really excited about! Tarnish & Gold is one of them. Check out their website and their “wish list” and see what you might be able to contribute.

They are also looking for submissions for an upcoming show. Details here.
